Helenvale faces severe challenges due to gang violence, impacting the lives of its approximately 35,000 residents. Overcrowded living conditions, with an average of seven people sharing 17.5m² homes, exacerbate these difficulties. The community experiences a tragically high rate of violence-related deaths, with an average of ten funerals weekly, a stark reminder of the urgent need for change.
The surge in gang violence in Helenvale has been exacerbated by a lack of access to constructive activities and opportunities, leaving many vulnerable to involvement. Furthermore, the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified these challenges, disrupting education, limiting access to crucial social programs, and deepening economic hardship within the community, creating an environment where violence can escalate.
